The Lingering Survival of the Unfit @Stand4, Brooklyn, NY curated by John Ros
BAY RIDGE, BROOKLYN — Stand4 Gallery and Community Art Center is pleased to present the new video installation, The Lingering Survival of the Unfit, 2018, by Stephanie J. Williams. The exhibition, curated by John Ros, borrows from the title of the piece and brings Williams back to the New York City Area after the inclusion of PINOY/ PLOY, 2016 in Fictions at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Harlem, NY.
The Lingering Survival of the Unfit, 2018, will be comprised of four projections, with sound taken from interviews the artist conducted with her mother. “So they leave you alone” is echoed as the imagery presents a new stop-motion animation heavily influenced by the Bataan Death March of World War II.
The exhibition will be on view from August 24 through October 5, 2018. An artist reception will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 7-9 PM. The artist will also present a talk about her work on Saturday, September 1, 2018, starting at 1 PM.
Stephanie J. WIlliams lives in Washington DC. She received an MFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, and a BFA from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. Williams currently teaches in the Animation Department at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD.
John Ros currently lives and works in New York City and Harrisonburg, VA. He received an MFA from Brooklyn College, CUNY and a BFA from the SUNY Binghamton. Ros is an Assistant Professor of Art at James Madison University’s School of Art, Design, and Art History, where he also serves as the Director and Chief Curator of the Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art. Ros is also the Founder and Director of studioELL.
Founded in January 2017 as an artist-run initiative, Stand4’s pursuit is to be alive and working towards a better world through the arts as an active medium of engagement. Stand4 serves as a generator of meaning, action, agency, collaboration, and social justice. It is shapeless, non-conforming, and responsive to the times. Stand4 is meant to exist as a catalyst: a way to envision a more socially and environmentally just future.
Housed in a former medical office in the heart of Bay Ridge, Stand4 brings the visual arts and programming to the center of the community, opening up opportunities for social, political and cultural connections and creating a discourse that bridges culture and tradition and includes new voices towards a more sustainable future inspired by local interests.

Borrowing its title from “open world” style video game environments, Open World features eight contemporary artists and artist teams who engage in world-building through installation, video, digital media, sculpture, and collage. They invite their viewers to enter into these new worlds, constructing narratives or introducing characters that help the audience move through and understand the alternate realities and imagined spaces they’ve created.
